West Ashley grew up across the river from the peninsula through the middle of the twentieth century. The inner neighborhoods (Windermere, Byrnes Downs, Avondale, the Crescent) are mostly 1930s to 1960s cottages and brick ranches, many with oak strip floors under old carpet and trim that has been painted a dozen times. Further out along Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road the houses get newer, from the seventies onward.
The requests here are mostly interior: taking out a wall to open the kitchen to the living room, patching in or extending hardwood, replacing tired windows and doors, and matching new trim to what's in the rest of the house. Low-lying parts of West Ashley, especially around Church Creek, also deal with repeat flooding, and that changes what belongs in the bottom few feet of a wall.

Mid-century casing, base and oak strip flooring can be matched if you know what to look for. We track down the closest profile or build it up from stock pieces, so a new doorway or a finished addition doesn't look added on.
Opening up walls
Many of these houses have a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and the living areas. Taking one out means a properly sized beam and posts carried down to the foundation, and we bring in an engineer when the change calls for one.
Older paint, careful demolition
Houses built before 1978 may have lead paint on the trim, windows and siding. Federal rules require lead-safe work practices when that paint is disturbed, and we plan demolition and cleanup around them.
